About the Department

The Department of Philosophy has started journey since 1960. Established gradually since 1960, the department has significantly enriched the College's tradition of academic excellence over the past sixty years. Initially, the department focused on Humanities and Social Sciences, offering the courses as subsidiary subjects within the Honours programme. In special cases, department also share advanced resources with other departments. At present, the department is running with Honours and Major programme allied with Minor and IDC for subsidiary programmes.
Our faculty members continuously update their teaching and research skills by participating in seminars, workshops, orientation programmes (O.P) and refresher courses (R.C) at the state, national, and international levels. We focus on building a solid foundation through philosophical theory, logical methods, and applied philosophy, equipping students to analyze and address real-world philosophical challenges effectively. Our commitment extends to fostering an environment of critical inquiry, ethical reflection and social responsibility, encouraging students to engage thoughtfully with the complexities of philosophical issues. Welcome to the Department of Philosophy at Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous), Narendrapur, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Since its inception in 1960, alongside other core departments, the department has offered Honours and Major programme at present, fostering a tradition of academic excellence.
We are proud of the distinguished faculty members who have shaped our department's rich legacy. These include Principal Maharaj, Vice-Principal Maharaj, Sri Haran Bhattacharyya, Dr. Pralayankar Bhattacharya and Prof. Santanu Bhat (Present Head of the Department). In the formative years, significant contributions from Prof. Bhat greatly enhanced the department at present form.
Our academic environment has greatly benefited from the guidance of esteemed guest lecturers as well as from the professors from University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University and Rabindra Bharati University who are the members of the Board of Studies of the department. The department has been a hub for intellectual exchange, hosting seminars featuring lectures by distinguished professors from state, national and international level. We have been privileged to host various national and international seminars in the department for the upliftment of our students in each and every semester. For an international seminar of the department, we are grateful to the resource persons, distinguished Prof. (Dr.) Gangadhar Kar Nyāyācārya, Department of Philosophy, Jadavpur University and Prof. (Dr.) M. Matiur Rahman, Former Professor, Department of Philosophy, Dhaka University, Bangladesh.
Additionally, we are grateful for the valuable insights shared by the members of the Board of Studies of the department Ret. Prof. Aparna Banerjee (C.U), Ret. Prof. Priyambada Sarkar (C.U), Prof. Sanjukta Basu (R.B.U), Prof. Rupa Bandyopadhyay (J.U), Prof. Manidipa Sanyal (C.U), Prof. Sabita Samanta (WBSU), Prof. Proyash Sarkar (J.U), Prof. Pralayankar Bhattacharya (C.U) and Prof. Tamoghna Sarkar (JU). Their contributions have enriched our curriculum and inspired both faculty and students, fostering a vibrant intellectual community.
The department dedicated to fostering the development of students who will contribute themselves for the development of the society and building nation, aligning with the core philosophy of Swami Vivekananda. We invite you to join us in this enriching journey of the same.

Competent guidance has been provided to the students to crack the P.G. Entrance Examination in different University and Common University Entrance Test (CUET) throughout India by the department.
At present, the alumni of the department of Philosophy are pursuing their Master of Arts (M.A Degree) in Philosophy from various prestigious University like Jawaharlal Nehru University (J.N.U), Banaras Hindu University (B.H.U) and Jadavpur University (J.U) etc.
