No educational institution is complete without a library. And a well organized and well managed library with a rich collection makes the institution even more complete and great. Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous), Narendrapur is not an exception either. The college library started its journey way back in 1963 merely with a few almirah of books. With the passage of time, it has grown bigger and better in all senses - documents, users and staff (the Trinity of library). Over the years it has seen many changes, has shifted from one place to another a number of times, but yet, it has retained its weightage.

Library & Reading Room

The library system in Residential College, Narendrapur consists of one RFID enabled open access central library and twelve departmental libraries. The library has a significantly large collection of books, journals, magazines, newspapers and other resources. At present, the collection includes more than 57000 books, several printed journals and magazines and many online journals and eBooks. Sound infrastructure including state of the art technologies is the back bone of this library. A team of enthusiastic library staff have made it envying to the other college libraries. Intellectually brilliant users are its driving force to excel further. The main mission of this library is to satisfy its parent body i.e. the college. But, the x-factor is the higher authority that always endeavours to take it to the next level. In a nutshell, it is the learning resources centre of the Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous), Narendrapur.

One important facility of this college library is the E-Library Reading Room. At present, there are 53 All-In-One PCs in total along with internet connectivity provided via Wi-Fi network. This E-Library actually facilitates the students to access required academic information, to prepare notes, to comprehend different topics of their interest, to prepare themselves for semester examinations, to sit for different competitive examinations namely IIT-JAM etc. The students can also access different e-resources (ebooks & ejournals) and previous year’s questions. This well lit and spacious E-Library is a very popular place among the students.

Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous), Narendrapur library has a large and rich collection of textbooks, curriculum enrichment materials, reference books, journals, magazines and other documents. At present, total number of books accessioned is 84075. Total number of subscribed and purchased printed journals and magazines is 35. The library makes 6 newspapers accessible to the users for current affairs. In addition to the above, the library subscribes to the N-List programme of INFLIBNET wherein the users i.e. both students and staffs can access e-journals and e-books of different publishers or sponsoring bodies from anywhere and anytime. The users are provided with individual login ids and passwords for that purpose. The library has a comprehensive collection of religious books including Vedas, Gitas, Upanishadas, Mahabharata, books on Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Sarada Devi, Sister Nivedita, and so on. A great percentage of the total collection is text books and curriculum enrichment materials to meet the need of the parent body i.e. the college.

Library Rules and Regulation

1.
        a.Timing of Issue and Return : Monday to Friday (for Students) from 10:30 am to 5 pm;
        b.Library books meant to be returned / issued should be presented to the circulation counter at least 15 minutes earlier than scheduled closing time of the same;
        c.The circulation counter will remain closed after 1:30 pm every Saturday.
2.  A user has to return a book before the scheduled date of return if the book is urgently required by the library.
3.  A fine of Re. 1 is to be charged per book per day overdue (daily issue) and regarding long term issue (book bank) overdue fee @ Re.1/- per volume per day will be charged for the
     first seven days and Rs.2/- per volume per day from the eighth day onwards.
4. If the dates of return of books fall during a long vacation (e.g. Puja Vacation or Summer Vacation), they must be returned within 3 days from the day of re-opening of the college 
      after the vacation.
5. Books written in, underlined or otherwise defaced or damaged must be replaced (or may be paid at a rate to be determined by the library).
6. Books lost must be replaced (by same edition or any of the subsequent editions) or paid 1.5 times of the price of the latest edition.
7. Borrowers must examine the physical condition of the books before borrowing and bring to the notice of the circulation section any defect in a book, otherwise, if any mutilation, 
     defacement or damage be subsequently detected, the person to whom the book was issued last will be held responsible for such damage.
8. Loose numbers or bound volumes of periodicals, books from reading room and reference books are not issued on loan. 
9. Books will be issued and delivered to a registered member in person.
10. If the book is one of a set or series, and the volume cannot be obtained singly, the whole set or series must be replaced at the User’s cost. 
11.  A UG student is entitled to retain 4 books with him against his borrower’s card for 2 weeks at a time while a PG student can retain 6 books at a time in his possession for 2 weeks. 
     A Research Scholar can keep 10 books for a period of 6 months. 
12. The permanent staff members who are supplied with books from the library can in no way retain books beyond a year.
13. A sum of Rs. 300 will be charged for the loss of a library card.
14. Before leaving the college permanently or for a long time a member will have to clear all his library dues.

Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous) Library is served by two Librarians namely Sukchand Hazra and Arnab Saha Kundu. The librarians are supported by a team of dynamic staff members who work tirelessly to maintain routine library operations and satisfy the library clientele.

What is the timing of the Library?

The library opens at 10:30 am and closes at 5 pm except E-Library which closes at 8 pm. On Saturday, the library including E-Library closes at 1:30 pm.

What is the timing of the Reading Room?

The Reading Room opens at 10:30 am and closes at 4:45 pm.

What is the timing for book issue and return?

No. Book issue-return facility is not available on Saturday.

Library Rules and Regulations

This library is a Closed Access Library. Students are not allowed to access the stack in person. They have to access the OPAC or Computerized Catalogue to search books and fill up Requisition Form to place demand. Subsequently the Library Staff extract the books from the stack and make them available for issue. The teaching staff, however, can access the stack in person.

Is printing facility available?

Printing facility is available but students must bring papers along with them.

Is photocopying facility available?

No. There is no photocopying facility available for students.

Who can use the library?

The bona fide students of the college, teaching and non-teaching staff members, monastic members and research scholars can use the library.
