About The Department
The Department of Mathematics came into being in August 1960 with the three-year B.Sc. degree course in Mathematics Honours. Sixty-one years down the line, it has had much to feel happy about. It has had a faculty committed to the course of excellence and also students – scores of them – who have brought glory to it by their brilliant academic performance.
The Department started with seven boys on its rolls. The first faculty comprised four teachers – Sri Gobindadev Bhattacharya, Sri Baidyanath Basu, Sri Sudarshan Das and Sri Rasik Chakraborty. Sri Bhattacharya, a man of rich experience was entrusted with the charge of the first Head of the Department and he was ably assisted by three young enthusiastic ex-students of the Ashrama Students' Home at Pathuriaghata. They started their teaching career imbued with Swami Vivekananda's ideal of making true men of their pupils.
Sri Bhattacharya joined the Dept. on 01.08.1960 as a full time Senior Lecturer. He was very much interested in Astronomy. During his service and even after retirement (on 05.05.1965) from our college, he would find pleasure in helping the students and teachers to observe the night sky through telescope.
After the retirement of Sri Bhattacharya, Sri Makhan Lal Nag became the second Head of the Department who joined the Dept. on 06.05.1965 as a Senior Lecturer. Sri Nag helped the Principal in administrative work as Vice-Principal almost from the beginning of his service here till retirement.
No annals of growth and development of the Department can do without a loving and respectful remembrance of Dr. Sudarshan Das who joined the Dept. as a Part-time Lecturer on 01.08.1960 and later became a full time Lecturer on 01.08.1961. He was the third Head of the Department from 02.11.1979 till his retirement in 28.02.1995. He was an outstanding teacher, the memory of whose unique style of exposition left an indelible mark on the minds of his students. His students loved him and held him in the highest esteem. Affable, soft-spoken, affectionate, he served the Department with exemplary dedication. He was a good actor and directed many plays put on the boards during college functions. His superannuation in 1995 marked the end of an era in the history of the Department.
Dr. Yudhisthir De became the fourth Head of the Department who joined the Dept. on 07.08.1961 as a full time Lecturer. He was a good singer also. He used to sing traditional bhakti songs in the Dol Utsav celebrated by our college in the Shri Gouranga Bhavana every year. Students, monks and guests enjoyed his songs very much.
After the retirement of Dr. De, Dr. Nanipada Bhanja became the fifth Head of the Department who joined the Dept. on 02.08.1963 as a full time Lecturer. After his retirement on 31.08.1998, Dr. Bijoy Kumar Bera became the sixth Head of the Department who joined the Dept. on 02.11.1979 as a full-time Lecturer. He was an ex-student of the Department. Dr. Bera played a significant role in sustaining the upward mobility of the Department and enhancing its reputation. Post retirement, he has been appointed Dy. Controller of Examinations of our college and he is also taking classes regularly for Honours Courses as a Guest Faculty.
Another ex-student of the Dept., Dr. Nurul Islam took the baton of Headship from Dr. Bera on 01.12.2010 after his retirement from the service. He was the seventh Head of the Department who joined the Dept. on 02.11.1982 as a full-time Lecturer. Dr. Islam was actively engaged in research and was guiding some students for their Ph.D. degree. Two students were awarded Ph.D. degree under his guidance. He was also the Co-ordinator of the Vivekananda Centre for Research (VCR) of our college since its inception. After retirement, Dr. Islam is currently holding a Chair Professorship in the Dept. The Chair was created out of an endowment in the memory of Prof. N.N. Biswas.
The sudden and untimely sad demise of one of our talented faculties Sri Partha Pratim Basu on 05.04.2019, who joined the Department on 10.12.1999, was an immeasurable loss to the Department. He was a great teacher in the field of Real Analysis. We have lost one good teacher, a great colleague as well as one good human being.
The role of vanguard towards our journey moving ahead is now taken by the present faculty of six full time members. Dr. Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Pulak Samanta (an alumnus of the Dept.), Sri Tshering Dorjee Bhutia, Dr. Sumit Sovan Sardar, Sri Biswadip Pal (SACT), headed by Dr. Nanigopal Mandal (an alumnus of the Dept.) has been putting in their best efforts to keep up the tradition of excellence set up by their predecessors.Dr. Mandal is the eighth head of the Dept. We are also happy and proud to get direct help towards teaching from our present Principal, Swami Ekachittananda, who happens to be an alumnus of the department.
In this endeavour the Department got some extremely useful support from some Guest faculties like Dr. Nalini Ranjan Roy (Ex-Principal of Balurghat College) from 1962 – 1972, Dr. Ramkrishna Ghosh (Ex-faculty of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata) from 1964 – 1966, Dr. Murari Mohan Roy Chaudhuri (Ex-faculty of Presidency College, Kolkata) from 1974 – 1980, Dr. Hemendra Kumar Ganguly (Ex-HOD, Dept. of Math. Scottish Church College, Kolkata) from 1975 – 1983, Dr. Pramatha Nath Sengupta (Ex-faculty of Bangabasi College), Dr. Sadhan Kumar Mapa (Ex-faculty of Presidency College, Kolkata), Dr. Sachindranath Baxi (Ex-HOD of the Dept. of Math., Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur). The Dept. is also proud of having the services from the following alumnus of the Dept. – Dr. Tapan Kumar Kar (at present a faculty of IIEST, Shibpur), Dr. Anjan Kumar Bhuniya (at present a faculty of Visva-Bharati University), Dr. Sunil Kumar Maity (at present HOD of Dept. of Pure Mathematics, CU), Sri Susanta Kumar Bera, Sri Ram Chandra Manna and Sri Dipak Roy (Retired from D. A. College, Garia) as Guest faculties. At present the Dept. is getting useful support from Sri Samar Ghosh (IAS, Ex-Chief Secretary, Govt. of WB) as Guest faculty. The Department gratefully remembers and acknowledges the dedicated services rendered by all of them.
Research profile of our department is also worth mentioning. Two fresh youngsters are doing active research. Sri Bhutia, who joined the Dept. on 08.11.2019, is working on Mathematical Modelling at C.U. (Department of Applied Mathematics) towards Ph.D., while Dr. Sardar, who joined the Dept. on 08.11.2019, has done his Ph.D. on Thermo-elasticity from J.U. in 2023. Dr. Mandal, who joined the Dept. on 14.08.1997, presently publishes and edits books on mathematics. He is engaged in writing several books on mathematics. Dr. Samanta, who joined the Dept. on 12.07.2019, is working in the area of Modal Logic and Rough Set Theory on which he has published several research papers. Swami Ekachittananda works in the area of Mathematical Economics. Sri Pal, who joined the Dept. on 01.01.2020 as a SACT (State Aided College Teacher) and also served the Dept. as a Chair Professor from 2nd January 2018 to 31st December 2020, presently publishes books on mathematics and also engaged in writing several books on mathematics. He has been registered in the Comp. Sc. Dept. of our college (through VCR) towards Ph.D. degree. Dr. Mukhopadhyay, who joined the Dept. on 01.07.1997, has published over twenty research papers, mostly in Abstract and Linear Algebra, subjects on which he has also authored/edited books at National and International level. He also works in History of Mathematics, in particular on the Natural History of Genesis of Zero as a number. He has published papers, articles and books (published by VCR) in this area. He has instituted the ZERO Gallery, a permanent panel exhibition, where fabrication work was done by BITM, Kolkata, during our Diamond Jubilee celebration in the year 2021. He has also spearheaded and appeared as the narrator in a documentary film "Genesis of Zero", which was screened in The International Science Film Festival of India in Goa on 12th Dec. 2021 and in the ZERO PROJECT, an International Web Conference in Amsterdam by ZerOrigIndia Foundation, with which he is closely associated. Dr. Mukhopadhyay has visited several Academic Institutes/Universities of eminence in India and abroad, where he has given about 175 invited lectures/talks on topics of his research areas.
The achievement of our Department is not confined to success in examinations alone. The students of the Dept., apart from their pursuit of academic excellence, have always shown a keen interest in the different co-curricular and extra-curricular activities of the department in particular and the college as a whole. A wall magazine 'MATHEMATICA' edited by the students of our Dept. is brought on a regular basis. Occasionally students take part in Seminar discussion on different topics of the syllabus. From 2009 the Dept. restructured its syllabus and focus to the then requirement of Academic Autonomy granted to our college by the UGC. Naturally from this period onward our boys have been writing the examinations conducted by our college, whence their success and achievements may be found as reflected in several pan India entrance examinations, like that of IIT, ISI, IISc, TIFR, IIEST, IISER, CMI, HCU, ISM, CU, JU, RKM-VERI etc. towards progression into higher studies. The department takes much pride in the fact that the faculty lists of a good many number of these Institutes of our country, where higher studies and research in mathematics is undertaken, now features quite a few names of our ex-students and the list is indeed too long to be reproduced here.
The Department does not rest on its laurels. It continues its efforts at further excellence and looks forward to a brighter future in the current CCFUP (NEP 2020) regime.

Objective
Mathematics Honours - Mathematics, though not a science per se, is often referred to as the mother of all sciences. Its importance for a student willing to pursue basic science can never be underestimated. The principal objective of our syllabus is to empower the young learners, who aspire to make a career in teaching and/or research in Mathematics or any other related science subjects in future, so that their transition to the next higher step in mathematics learning may be as smooth as possible, through helping them to master a solid foundational knowledge of the basic theories from various branches of modern mathematics.
Mathematics Minor – This program is designed for the students who take Mathematics as an elective subject along with their chosen honours subject. Some of these honours subjects like Physics / Chemistry / Statistics / Computer Science / Economics specifically require some mathematical knowledge back-up, which is far from the rudimentary knowledge of mathematics that is provided at the plus two levels in general. Hence this course is designed to cater to this specific need by chalking out a common minimum requirement of the above mentioned disciplines, as far as practicable.
